A roof valley carries rainwater from two sloping roof sections towards the gutter. It is one of the busiest drainage routes on a pitched roof, so the valley material, support, width, laps, and connection to the gutter all need to work together.

When a roof is being replaced or a damaged valley needs more than a local repair, homeowners may hear two broad options discussed: a traditionally detailed lead-lined valley or a preformed glass-reinforced polyester (GRP) valley system. Both can form an effective weathering detail when the right product is specified and installed correctly. They are not interchangeable in every roof layout.

The right choice cannot be made from material name alone. A roofer should first check the roof pitch, the angle between the two slopes, the tile or slate type, the water load, the valley length, the supporting structure, and how the valley finishes at its head and foot.

How a roof valley works

Rain does not fall only on the visible valley channel. Water from both adjoining roof slopes is directed into it, sometimes together with runoff from a dormer or a higher roof section. The valley then has to carry that water into the gutter without letting it track beneath cut tiles or slates.

A complete valley detail can include:

  • Valley boards or another specified support
  • An additional underlay layer beneath the valley
  • Battens positioned to suit the system
  • A lead lining or preformed GRP trough
  • Properly cut and secured tiles or slates
  • Correct laps between sections
  • Head, abutment, or dormer details where relevant
  • A clear discharge into the eaves gutter

If one of those parts is missing, damaged, undersized, or poorly joined, replacing only the visible lining may not solve the leak.

Lead-lined valleys: adaptable traditional detailing

Rolled lead sheet has a long history in roofing and can be shaped to suit valleys, flashings, dormers, porches, and other junctions.   • Repair options where the surrounding leadwork and roof structure remain suitable

That flexibility does not make lead forgiving of poor workmanship. Lead expands and contracts, so long continuous pieces, incorrect fixings, inadequate support, or badly formed laps can contribute to splitting, buckling, or fatigue. Lead-valley points to check

  • Is the proposed lead sheet suitable for a pitched valley application?
  • Are the individual bays and laps designed to allow movement?
  • Is the valley fully and evenly supported?
  • How will the lining finish at the ridge, dormer, wall, or gutter?
  • Are adjacent slates or tiles sound and properly secured?
  • Is existing lead being retained, repaired, or fully replaced?
  • Are old sealant patches hiding a split or an incorrect lap?

Leadwork should be designed and installed by someone with the right roofing and leadwork experience. A coating of sealant over a cracked valley is not the same as repairing the failed detail.

GRP valleys: lightweight, formed systems

GRP valleys are factory-formed components made from glass-reinforced polyester. Product ranges can include open troughs, dry valleys for tiles or slates, under-batten versions, and close-mitred heritage-style options. The exact profile matters because the fixing method and permitted roof geometry vary between products.

It also gives product-specific requirements for roof pitch, pitch variance, overlaps, valley boards, underlay, and fastening. Those details illustrate why a generic “GRP valley” specification is not enough.

The limitations are equally important. One GRP profile may not suit every pitch, roof covering, valley angle, or junction. A product intended for tiles should not be assumed suitable for slates, and a standard valley trough should not be substituted where an under-batten or close-mitred detail is required.

GRP-valley points to check

  • What is the exact product and is it intended for tiles, slates, or both?
  • Does it cover the roof pitch and the pitch difference between the two slopes?
  • What support and valley-board arrangement does the manufacturer require?
  • How much overlap is required between lengths at this pitch?
  • Are the correct battens, clips, fixings, and closures included?
  • How will the top and bottom of the valley be weathered?
  • Can the system integrate properly with a dormer, party wall, ridge, or change of roof covering?

Manufacturer instructions and current certification should be checked for the exact product being proposed, not for a vaguely similar valley profile.

Open GRP trough or dry valley: what is the difference?

The language can be confusing because GRP describes the material, while “dry valley” describes a type of system that does not rely on mortar to finish the cut tile or slate edges.

An open GRP trough leaves a visible channel between the two roof coverings, similar in broad appearance to an open metal-lined valley. A dry-valley system can include raised central upstands and side details that help manage water while tiles or slates are cut and fixed along the edges. Some close-mitred GRP systems aim for a narrower, more traditional-looking finish.

Ask to see the exact profile or technical sheet. The appearance, weathering path, cutting detail, and required clearances should all be understood before the old roof is stripped.

Which valley may suit an older Dublin roof?

Many Dublin City and inner-suburban homes have older slate roofs, chimney junctions, party-wall details, dormers, or roof additions completed at different times. A lead-lined valley may suit a traditional roof where its appearance and ability to form site-specific details are important.

However, age alone does not automatically require lead. A compatible GRP system may be practical during a full reroof if the pitch, slate or tile type, valley angle, support, and junctions fall within its specification.

The survey should look beyond the lining. Older valleys can conceal rotten boards, corroded fixings, torn underlay, previous cement repairs, poorly cut slates, and gutter outlets that no longer line up with the water path. Those issues affect the scope whichever surface material is chosen.

What about exposed homes in Bray and Wicklow?

On an exposed or elevated property, the complete roof system matters more than a simple material ranking. Wind-driven rain can reach laps and cut edges that stay dry in gentler conditions. Leaves, moss, and grit can also collect where a valley narrows or meets the gutter.

A site-specific recommendation should consider:

  • Roof pitch and the difference between adjoining slopes
  • The area of roof draining into the valley
  • Valley length, width, and outlet position
  • Wind exposure and surrounding buildings or trees
  • Tile or slate profile and fixing method
  • Dormers, roof windows, chimneys, parapets, and abutments
  • Gutter capacity and the downpipe route below

An exposed roof does not automatically mean lead or GRP is best. It means the details, certification, and workmanship deserve closer attention.

Repair the valley or replace it?

A small, clearly identified defect may sometimes be repaired. Wider replacement is more likely to be sensible when the valley is split in several places, poorly supported, incorrectly lapped, repeatedly patched, or surrounded by failing tiles, slates, underlay, or timber.

Warning signs include:

  • Damp marks that return after wind-driven rain
  • Debris or standing water remaining in the valley
  • Lifted, cracked, or badly cut tiles and slates beside the channel
  • Open joints, failed sealant, splits, buckling, or displaced sections
  • Water missing the gutter at the foot of the valley
  • Rot or staining visible from a safely accessible attic area
  • Several generations of temporary patches

Do not climb onto the roof to inspect a valley. It is a concentrated water route surrounded by cut roof coverings, and it can be slippery or fragile even when it looks dry. Use ground-level photographs where possible and leave close inspection to a properly equipped roofer.

Questions to ask before choosing a valley system

Before accepting a quotation, ask:

  • Why is lead or GRP being recommended for this roof?
  • What exact product, lead specification, or valley profile will be used?
  • Is it compatible with the roof pitch, valley angle, and tile or slate covering?
  • Will the valley boards, underlay, battens, and adjacent roof covering be inspected?
  • How will the head, foot, gutter, dormer, or wall junction be finished?
  • What happens if damaged timber or old repairs are found after opening the roof?
  • Are scaffolding, waste removal, gutter adjustments, and making good included?
  • What maintenance checks will be needed after installation?

The answer should relate to your roof rather than suggesting that one material is universally superior.
